Individual DBT Skills Training
In addition to individual psychotherapy, I offer individual DBT skills training. These sessions involve teaching specific sets of skills in four key areas:
Mindfulness (how to focus on your current experience, deliberately, without judgment).
Emotion Regulation (how to understand your emotions, change and reduce vulnerability to unwanted emotions).
Distress Tolerance (how to tolerate intense emotions without reacting in a way that worsens the situation).
Interpersonal Effectiveness (how to communicate effectively and get your interpersonal needs met).
These "class-like" sessions are more structured compared to individual therapy, with a set agenda for each session, and homework to help strengthen the skills learned. They may be a good supplement to individual therapy for any one who can benefit -- indeed, DBT skills have been found to help individuals with a range of emotional conditions. Additionally, they may be an alternative to group DBT skills training for clients in full-model DBT who prefer an individual setting.
